Abstract

The ELM grassland model (Innis 1978) was used to simulate the impact of different management practices upon a tallgrass prairie. The ELM grassland model is a total ecosystem model of a grassland that was developed by the US/IBP Grassland Biome program. It incorporates subsystem models similar in level of resolution and mechanism to those described for primary producers in Chapter 2 and for vertebrate and invertebrate consumers in Chapters 5 and 6. It was designed to be a generalized model that could be applied to the different US/IBP grassland sites. The experimental sites range from a desert grassland in New Mexico to a tallgrass prairie in Oklahoma. The Osage site is the tallgrass prairie site located in northeastern Oklahoma.
