Forest Successions

Throughout the discussion of Glacier’s forest communities in the last chapter, the words “seral” and “successional” kept appearing and reappearing. Although the discussion of succession has been held off until this chapter, it is simply not possible to understand or describe Glacier’s communities without continual reference to successional development. Nearly all of the park shows community development that reflects varying stages and rates of recovery from natural disturbances—some are simply more obvious than others.
