Abstract

The importance of the thumb as the only element that can oppose the long fingers cannot be overemphasized. Of course, the management of thumb injuries basically follows the principles that apply to hand surgery in general. Due to its unique importance in grasping, however, there are several additional principles that pertain mainly to the indications for amputations and reconstructive operations on the thumb.
