Abstract

It is generally agreed that destruction of a kidney transplant from a non-related donor (allograft) is a specific immune phenomenon, which depends upon the integrity (immuno-competence) of the cells of the patient’s immune system. Figure 10-1 shows the cells associated with the immune system; Figure 10-2, the cell lines associated with the inflammatory response, which is suppressed by the immunosuppressive drugs that prevent rejection of the transplant; and Figure 10-3, the structure of the immunoglobulins, which are similar to and probably function as antibodies.
