Light and Adrenal and Pituitary Functions
The adrenal gland is an organ central to the regulation of metabolism. It consists of two parts of varying embryonal origin: the adrenal medulla stemming from the ectoderm and the adrenal cortex stemming from the mesoderm. Although the functioning of the medullar portion can be assumed by the sympathetic ganglia present in the rest of the organism, life without the adrenal cortex is impossible, as shall be seen presently.
