Abstract

Geochemistry can also be defined as the study of the role chemical elements play in the synthesis and decomposition of natural materials of all kinds. Landscape geochemistry deals with the study of the environment that occurs at or near the daylight surface of the Earth. The environment results from the interaction of the lithosphere with the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere during geological, pedological and ecological time together with the cumulative effects of man’s activities during the past few hundred years.

“In the simplest terms, geochemistry may be defined as the science concerned with chemistry of the earth as a whole and of its component parts.”

Brian Mason, The Principles of Geochemistry, 3rd ed. (New York: John Wiley & Sons 1966),p.1.
