Abstract
Ecdysis in insects has aroused the curiosity of many observers. Usually, this process consists of three consecutive stages: splitting and shedding of the old cuticle; stretching and expansion of the new cuticle; and stabilization of the stretched cuticle in its expanded form by sclerotization. Darkening of the cuticle is frequently associated with the sclerotization process.
