Abstract
For many years, it has been known that the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in vertebrates involves a multitude of hormones, enzymes, metabolites, and ions (Unger et al. 1977, 1978). Some of the hormones include insulin (the hypoglycemic hormone), glucagon (the hyperglycemic hormone), somatotropin and somatostatin (which regulate secretion of insulin and glucagon), adrenal glucocorticoids, and epinephine. The first two peptide hormones are the primary determinants necessary for adaptive carbohydrate changes in the vertebrate animal to respond to nutritional and environmental demands. Although the absolute concentration of these hormones is important, the concentration of one relative to the other and to other regulatory agents must also be considered by the target tissue. The target cell must respond to the ratio of effector concentrations, that is, to what may be termed the cellular effector charge (Atkinson 1977).
