Abstract

In this decade many psychiatrists have felt a compelling need to urge their colleagues to remedicalize their specialty. Dr. Valerie Cowie, psychiatrist at Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children in Surrey, England, believes that the remedicalization is imperative. “We’ve ignored physiology, ignored organic reasons, due to our blind following of the psychological reasons.” She gave the example of autism, now seen clearly to be an organic defect rather than the result of “maternal deprivation.”1
