Abstract
Solid waste management consists of three phases. The first is concerned with collection, the second with processing, and the third with disposal. This chapter will deal with the second of these phases, processing. The method employed for processing has a great influence on the final or disposal phase. Methods employed may range from none at all, whereby the refuse is disposed of much in unchanged form to thermal processing where only the noncombustible residues remain for disposal. Other methods include biological and mechanical processing. This chapter is devoted to an in-depth discussion of mechanical volume reduction.
