Distribution and Forms of Siliceous Structures Among Protozoa

  • Chapter
Silicon and Siliceous Structures in Biological Systems

Abstract

It is not known who first noted that the Protozoa make glass. However, Ehrenberg (1830) knew of the siliceous spicules of silicoflagellates and Dujardin (1841) knew of the glassy nature of the particles in the tests of some Sarcodina, as of Difflugia, or EugJypha, and that these resisted strong acids. These researchers also were aware that silicon was the principal constituent of diatom shells. The siliceous nature of the en- doskeletons of Radiolaria was also known early, especially through the researches of Haeckel (1862) and Hertwig, (1879).
