Abstract
Radiolarians are planktonic protozoans that occur rather abundantly in all oceanic waters of normal salinity. Most of them live in the top few hundred meters of the water column, but a few inhabit deeper levels, to the ocean’s greatest depths. Members of the group forming the subject of this chapter (the polycystins) have durable skeletons of opaline silica, usually 40-150 micrometers in size, which make a substantial contribution to pelagic sediments in many parts of the World Ocean.
