The Ureter in Obstetrics and Gynecology

  • Chapter
The Ureter

Abstract

The ureter in the female is of great significance to both the gynecologist and the obstetrician. Although the anatomy, embryology, and physiology of the ureter are covered in depth in other chapters of this book, certain aspects referable to the ureter in the practice of gynecology and obstetrics need specific consideration here. Because embryologic development of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra parallels that of the female internal genitalia—i.e., the tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina—an anomaly in one system is often associated with a congenital abnormality in the “sister” system. Thus, it must be stressed that, whenever a congenital or developmental anomaly of the female genitalia or of the urinary tract is noted, one must pay careful attention to the other system. Of the congenital anomalies of the kidneys and ureters (whose prevalence may be as high as 10%), three-quarters occur in the female. However, only a small fraction of these changes are symptomatic or even associated with disease.
