The Ureter in Pediatrics

  • Chapter
The Ureter

Abstract

A significant segment of the ever-expanding field of pediatric urology involves diseases of the urinary collecting system, and more specifically, the ureter. As pediatricians become attuned to the fact that abdominal masses in children frequently have a urologic origin, and as they are continually reminded to search for morphologic abnormalities after the first urinary tract infection, a greater incidence of ureteral disease in children will be detected. A working knowledge of pediatric ureteral pathology is consequently of great importance to both the pediatrician and urologist. In accordance with this need, five major categories of ureteral disease seen in pediatrics are discussed in this chapter:

  1. 1.

    Ectopic ureter

  2. 2.

    Ureterocele

  3. 3.

    Ureteropelvic junction obstruction

  4. 4.

    Other pediatric ureteral obstructions

  5. 5.

    Non-obstructive ureteral dilation
