Abstract

In Chapter 4 we discussed the processes of abstraction: the creation of structures in memory corresponding to classes of objects and events, and the use of those structures for recognizing new stimuli. In Chapter 5 we discussed how the concepts of abstraction might be applied to the perception and knowledge of environments and persons. We now turn to a consideration of how these concepts can be applied to the perception and knowledge of the self.1
