Abstract
Despite the progress which has been made in recent years in the prevention and treatment of pulmonary embolism, this condition continues to be a major, potentially fatal complication of a large number of states and disorders. Therefore, as in the case of deep venous thrombosis, it is imperative at all times to be aware of such a possibility, so as to be able to identify its early presence. This is particularly true in the case of patients prone to intravascular clotting, such as the elderly and those undergoing orthopedic or gynecologic surgery or suffering from cardiac conditions or malignant neoplasms.
