Part of the book series: Radiology of Iatrogenic Disorders ((IATROGENIC))

Abstract

Abdominal hernias occur in 1.5% of the population, usually as a congenital or acquired primary condition, and account for over half a million operations per year in the United States (1). The increased frequency of surgical intervention has resulted in a significant incidence of iatrogenic hernias. These may be divided into three major categories: (a) incisional hernias (b) recurrences after previous hernial repair, and (c) internal herniation through surgically created mesenteric or peritoneal defects. An abdominal hernia may also occur as a complication of certain diagnostic or therapeutic procedures such as laparoscopy (2) and ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement (3, 4).
