Abstract
Diagnosis and admission data for patients entering any civilian hospital will depend on the community served by the institution and its geographic location. Allen and Curry, reporting from the Hurley Hospital in Michigan in 1956, stated that patients with abdominal trauma of all types represented 0.2% of all patients hospitalized and 2.2% of all patients entering the hospital with injury [1]. In 1973, 19.8% of patients admitted for injuries at the Morrisania Hospital in New York City suffered from abdominal trauma as the primary diagnosis (see Table 1.1).
