Quantitative Measures of Induced Mutagenesis

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Topics in Environmental Physiology and Medicine ((TEPHY))

Abstract

A surprisingly large number of substances have been found recently to act both as mutagens and as carcinogens (McCann et al., 1975). Unfortunately, it is not enough merely to know whether or not a chemical is a mutagen. It is essential also to determine quantitatively how mutagenic various agents are in a given assay system, and also to determine how mutable various biological systems are when treated with a given mutagen. Knowledge of the relative mutagenicity of substances is a critical element in the assessment of genetic risks associated with environmental chemicals; and knowledge of the relative mutability of organisms is important in assessing the merits of short-term test systems.
