Ascomycete Systematics

Abstract

Although the term “centrum” has not been generally used to describe apothetical development in the discomycetes, the concept includes the ascogenous system and sterile tissues occupying cleistothecial, perithecial, and pseudothecial cavities of other groups of ascomycetes. “Centrum” applies equally as well to discomycetes. Certainly a large number of taxa currently considered among the discomycetes display patterns of centrum development that are similar to, or often almost indistinguishable from, types of development described in other euascomycetes. In the discomycetes, any attempt to recognize centrum patterns must also take into account the role that the sterile tissue of the ascocarps plays in displaying the hymenium.
