Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present a review, summary and evaluation of nutrient-phytoplankton models which have been used in water quality management studies of estuaries. The basic concepts of eutrophication are first reviewed. These are incorporated in the conservation of mass relationship with estuarine transport equations to describe the spatial and temporal distribution of the relevant constituents. The application of these equations to eutrophication problems in various estuaries is demonstrated, particularly by studies which include both field and modeling activities. Similarly, those models whose development has been motivated by management questions are emphasized. Concluding remarks in the Applications section relate to an appraisal of the state of the art of estuarine eutrophication models and to their strengths, deficiencies, and future prospects with respect to both the scientific bases as well as engineering applications in the management context.
