Time Varying Hydrodynamics and Water Quality in an Estuary

Estuaries and Nutrients

Part of the book series: Contemporary Issues in Science and Society ((CISS))

Abstract

This paper is included in this symposium volume to illustrate the effect hydrographic factors such as the spring-neap tidal stratification-destratification cycle (4) can have on the distribution of oxygen and nutrients in the water column of an estuary. All too often scientists, modelers and managers, finding hydrographic processes in estuaries extremely difficult to measure and understand, neglect or ignore key features of hydrodynamics that have substantial bearing on “water quality.” As a result, monitoring strategies are often ill-conceived; models are frequently unverifiable; and water quality management objectives may not be cost-effectively met.
