Abstract

The NUSEX detector (3.5 × 3.5 × 3.5 m2) is a 150 t tracking calorimeter made up of a sandwich of 134 iron plates (1 cm thick) filled with limited streamer tubes [1] of 1 cm2 cross section and 3.5 m length. An orthogonal pick-up strip system allows tracks to be localized in two dimensions on each tube. In principle this detector can investigate lifetimes up to 1031 years, but only if the background problems are well understood along with the behaviour of various particles expected in the decays.
