Acute Pancreatitis

  • Chapter
Radiology of the Pancreas

Abstract

Acute pancreatitis represents a spectrum of inflammatory disease and may be subdivided into two types: acute pancreatitis, characterized by a single inflammatory episode, and acute relapsing (recurrent) pancreatitis, characterized by repeated episodes of inflammation (1). In both types, the pancreas resumes its normal morphologic and functional integrity following resolution of the inflammatory process. Although most patients recover quickly and without sequelae, others may develop a protracted clinical course with considerable morbidity and mortality.
