Carotid Body Tumors

  • Chapter

Abstract

The earliest publications on the subject of carotid body tumors were those of Marchand (1891), Paltauf (1892), Kretschmar (1893), Kopfstein (1895), von Heinleth (1900), Mönckeberg (1905), and Kaufmann and Ruppanner (1905). The paper by Marchand cites the first instance of a carotid body tumor resection performed unsuccessfully by Riegner in 1880. The first successful removel was that carried out by Maydl in 1886. Ligation of the common carotid artery in this case was fatal, heralding the operative mortality that was to accompany surgery of these lesions for the next 50 years. Paltauf (1892) next reported 4 cases of which only 1 tumor was removed without sacrifice of the carotid vessels. Kretschmar (1893) was the first to report metastasis to a regional lymph node. Kopfstein (1895) established the correct diagnosis preoperatively.
