Sedimentation of Phytoplankton Cells Within Controlled Experimental Ecosystems Following Launching, and Implications for Further Enclosure Studies

  • Chapter
Marine Mesocosms

Abstract

The bag is not just a bottle, as Verduin (1969) stated. It does not contain an undisturbed natural environment, either, as we may have all hoped. Organisms trapped within an enclosed marine environment may be compared to caged birds, which cannot fly any longer. Plankton within the enclosure, although still plankton, cannot float or drift naturally.
