Endocrine Aspects of Germ Cell Tumors

  • Chapter
The Human Teratomas

Part of the book series: Contemporary Biomedicine ((CB,volume 3))

Abstract

Germ cell tumors of both gonadal and extragonadal origin may contain a variety of cells capable of secreting hormones which occasionally produce clinical manifestations. Endocrine changes may also result from an effect of the tumor on the adjacent stroma, particularly within the ovary, or from decreased secretory activity of an involved organ as a result of destruction of its parenchyma. This article will describe the types of endocrine abnormalities associated with germ cell tumors and the mechanisms involved in the production of these abnormalities.
