Abstract
It is established that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [l,25-(OH)2D3] acts in a manner similar to that proposed for other steroid hormones. Target cells for 1,25-(OH)2D3 contain in their cytoplasm specific “receptor” proteins which bind l,25-(OH)2D3 with high affinity. Once the hormone-receptor complex is formed, it is transferred to the cell nucleus, where it initiates the synthesis of new messenger RNA. The messenger RNA in turn is translated in the ribosomes of the cells to new proteins responsible for the specific effects of the hormone.
