Abstract
When asked about the influence his mentors had on his professional development, a Nobel laureate in physics recalled their importance, not so much as teachers, but as models of thinking and working:
I knew the techniques of research. I knew a lot of physics. I had the words, the libretto, but not quite the music. In other words, I had not been in contact with men who were deeply imbedded in the tradition of physics: men of high quality. This was my first real contact with first-rate creative minds at the high point of their power. (Zuckerman, 1977, p. 123)
