Abstract
There are several mechanisms for blister formation in the skin (Fig. 16-1), including:

Cytolysis: destruction of epidermal cells, as in herpes simplex
-
Acantholysis: destruction of intracellular bridges, as in pemphigus
-
Spongiosis: edema between epidermal cells, as in acute contact dermatitis
-
Epidermolysis: damage at the epidermal-dermal junction; mechanical = epidermolysis bullosa, immune = bullous pemphigoid, dermatitis herpetiformis
