The Pathology of Intracranial Arterial Aneurysms and Their Complications

Abstract

Aneurysms are persistent, localized dilatations of the vessel wall, classified according to shape or etiology. True aneurysms are formed by the dilatation of the constituents of the vessel wall which exhibits profound structural alterations. In contradistinction, a false aneurysm results from partial or complete rupture of the wall, where the pulsatile hematoma formed from the extravasated blood is walled off by perivascular tissues and organization of the fibrinous coagulum, with retention of functional continuity between the newly formed false lumen and the parent vessel lumen.

This Chapter not only discusses the pathology and histology of intracranial anuerysms but also reviews portions of related subjects further detailed in separate chapters (see Table of Contents and Index). However the editor (JLF) elected not to alter this chapter since this valuable supplementary information is presented from the standpoint of a noted pathologist who has made significant and lucid contributions to the literature on intracranial aneurysms (478–495).
