Protein Synthesis on Endoplasmic Reticulum

  • Odd Nygård
  • Peter Westermann

This section deals primarily with the molecular mechanisms by which newly synthesized proteins are selected for different intracellular destinations or for secretion to the extracellular medium. Much of the data center around the so called signal hypothesis, which implies that in typical cases the assignation mechanism is cotranslational. This would mean that not only the structure of nascent proteins, but also their destination, is genetically encoded in the translated mRNA.
