Scottish empiricist, moral and political philosopher, historian, and economist, 1711–1776, who, unable to secure an academic appointment and dominated by a “love of literary fame,” suffered severe disappointment as his major philosophical works “fell dead-born from the press” yet lived to see them receive the recognition they deserved.
