Abstract
Dutch rationalist, moral and political philosopher, 1632–1677, who, although he earned his living by unobtrusively polishing lenses, was expelled from his synagogue and persecuted for his opinions. His works were banned as atheistic, and it is only fairly recently that Spinoza has been generally recognized as the “God-intoxicated Jew” that he was.
