Abstract
Among long-term care institutions in the United States, nursing homes for elderly persons are predominant; they are most frequently referred to in discussions of institutional care in professional and lay literature, and are most feared by the elderly population. About 1,300,000 persons reside in 18,000 nursing homes.1 It is estimated that about 20% of all elderly persons will spend some time in a nursing home before dying.2–5
