Abstract
The northern Great Plains extend from the valley of the Platte River in Nebraska to well beyond the Canadian border and from the Rocky Mountains on the west to the Central Lowlands on the east (Fenneman, 1931). The eastern and southern boundaries are difficult to define because changes in relief, climate, and vegetation are gradual. Much of the region is underlain by coal deposits (Figure 1.1).
