Abstract

Complex actions, thoughts, and emotions are made possible by the actions of the central nervous system, which coordinates all the incoming sensory information from inside and outside the body, and prepares and instructs the effectors throughout the body to make a coordinated response. The effect of aging on this system apparently underlies many of the age differences observed in cognitive functioning, including memory, learning, problem solving, information processing, and intelligence.
