Abstract
Hearing is a function that governs the individual’s ability to exchange communication with others and to appreciate the variety of natural and artificially created sounds that form an essential part of the matrix of everyday life. The ears contain the sensory organs responsible for converting the energy of waves of sound pressure into neural impulses that are ultimately interpreted in the brain as words, musical notes, bird calls, and the grinding of machinery. Like the visual system, the mechanisms through which the auditory system accomplishes its analyses of sounds are studied in terms of its peripheral and central features.
