Determinants of Successful Aging: Findings from a Study with Ergoloid Mesylates (Hydergine)

  • Conference paper

Summary

A long-term double-blind comparison between Hydergine, 4.5 mg per day and placebo, including 148 healthy pensioners of both sexes, was analyzed after 3 years of study. Based on medical and psychological assessment criteria, 52 subjects were considered to have successfully aged, and 45 to have poorly aged over this time span. The remaining subjects had either withdrawn from the study or could not be allocated to one of the two groups. A retrospective analysis of possible predictor variables yielded two statistically significant and meaningful predictors: a diagnosis of hypertension at baseline, and treatment with Hydergine. Hypertensive subjects were less likely to age with success, while treatment with Hydergine was found to be significantly associated with successful aging in our sample. The study is still ongoing.
