Abstract
Early descriptions of abdominal wall tightening were offered by general surgeons, willing to trim extra fat and skin. Kelly, Johns Hopkins’ eminent gynecologic surgeon, in 1889 resected a large horizontal ellipse of redundant tissue. Rochay removed a trough of tissue from above the umbilicus, and then closed the defect as an inverted “T.” Babcock later recommended a vertically oriented resection of skin and fat. Gonzalez-Ulloa expanded the resection principle to the gluteal region. Finally in 1965, Callia demonstrated the advantage of ample abdominal skin undermining and rectus abdominus plication. His procedure is the one we still use today with a few added variations.
