Abstract

Infections of the cardiovascular system are infrequent in normal children. The majority of patients with endocarditis have underlying structural heart disease; however, it is estimated that 5% of cases of endocarditis in children, and up to 50% of cases in newborns and young infants occur in the absence of preexisting cardiac anomalies.45 Incidences of mortality and morbidity continue to be high, despite the availability of potent antimicrobials because of the difficulty in diagnosis and the severity of the hemodynamic effects. Improved survival of children with structural cardiac abnormalities, through advances in cardiac surgery and use of prosthetic devices, provides increased opportunities for infectious complications.
