Abstract

We have previously shown that human oocytes sometimes express particles with striking resemblance to C-type retroviruses and that corresponding follicular fluids, derived mainly from preovulatory follicles, were analyzed for their contents of RD114 p30 related antigen. Taken together, 70% of the fluids contained detectable levels of such antigen. Attempts were made to correlate the amount of p30-like antigen to the follicle maturation. This was done by calculating a maturation index based on the pattern of follicular steroids and correlating the levels of virus like antigen to that index. However, no positive correlation could be found between the degree of follicular maturation and levels of retroviral related antigen. Some of the fluids also contained RT-like activity.
