Abstract

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is the exogenous retrovirus of cats. In addition, three types of endogenous retroviral DNA are found in cat cells but are not usually expressed as infectious virus. These are represented by multiple copies of the RD114 provirus, FeLV-related proviruses and FeLV-related long terminal repeats (LTRs). FeLV is the only one of these known to cause disease. Most cats which are exposed naturally to FeLV recover and are immune. However, some become permanently infected and are then at high risk of developing a FeLV-related disease. Many of these diseases are neoplastic, such as leukemias and fibrosarcomas but the majority are non-malignant conditions like anaemia and immunosuppression. Interactions between FeLV and cellular genes appear to be important in the pathogenesis of at least some of these diseases. Acutely pathogenic, defective viruses which are recombinants between FeLV and the myc gene have been isolated from T-cell leukaemias and recombinants between FeLV and seven other proto-oncogenes have been isolated, as feline sarcoma viruses, from fibrosarcomas. Hence, transduction of proto-oncogenes by FeLV appears to be an essential process in many cases of FeLV-induced neoplasia.
