Abstract

The pathogenesis and molecular functions of the avian retroviruses have been comprehensively reviewed in recent years (1–3). This presentation will focus on three replication-defective avian tumor viruses that are responsible for causing, in a relatively short period of time, acute leukemias in chickens. The involvement of these viruses with the hemopoietic system of the chicken stimulated investigators to search for and to characterize the corresponding in vitro target cells present in hemopoietic organs. In vitro assays for growing target cells for all known acute leukemia viruses are now available and have been described in the literature (4,5).
