Abstract

The ability to dissect immune parameters in situ by immunohistology and in vitro by a variety of assays has resulted in an increasing awareness of the complexity of the host-tumour relationship. The correlation in some tumours between infiltration by leukocytes and prognosis offered preliminaryindications of the effectiveness of the anti-tumour response (1,2). More recently, it has been possible by staining of sections to show the presence of macrophages, T helper and T cytotoxic/suppressor cells and B lymphocytes in a wide range of tumours using specific monoclonal antibodies. In addition, several groups have been able to purify T lymphocytes and macrophages from the tumour and demonstrate proliferative and cytotoxic activity against autologous tumour cells (reviewed in 3).
