Abstract

Participating in a conference honoring Gail Young was an important event for me. Gail has been a close friend for a number of years and it was a true pleasure to take part in demonstrating the respect and genuine affection which the mathematics community has for him. I was therefore quite pleased when I was asked to write an article summarizing the panel discussion on mathematics education. But the editors gave me an even broader charge, suggesting that I could take these few pages and write what I felt were the important educational implications coming out of the conference.
