Cycling of Organic Carbon in a Coastal Marine System

Abstract

A carbon (C) budget in terms of input to the sediment, degradation of organic matter in surficial sediments, and accumulation in the sediment column was constructed for a representative area in the Kiel Bight. A transect of six stations was used to include both vertical and horizontal transport rates. The deeper parts (below 13.5 m) of the transect (1 m wide) accumulate 1700 mol C yr−1, while twice as much is returned to the water column. Input to this region is provided by pelagic sedimentation and horizontal advection of macrophyte debris from the nonaccumulating shallow zone in equal amounts—each being 2500 mol C yr−1. Due to seasonal and spatial variation of the observed rates and to uncertainties in the model assumptions, the estimates should be considered a first approximation.
