The Role of Captive Populations in Global Conservation

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Zoos, like national parks, are torn between two conflicting goals: public service and biological conservation (Forster, 1973; Western and Henry, 1979). Both institutions arose primarily for public entertainment and recreation and survive largely because of it. Because these motivations help justify conservation (Miller, 1982), we cannot dismiss them. But, on the other hand, we cannot leave conservation to the whim of human entertainment.
