Abstract

For the past 35 years, I have been collecting data on the history of mammals in captivity, with particular emphasis on those species that have reproduced and in the determination of life spans. This information has been gleaned from the available literature in a number of languages including annual reports and inventories of zoological gardens, which may have limited local distribution. I also have personally examined the archives of scores of zoological collections around the world. Much of the archival material has never before been published and is used extensively in Tables 18.2 and 18.3 of this chapter.
