The Main Intrinsic Polypeptide and Intercellular Communication in the Ocular Lens

Development of Order in the Visual System

Part of the book series: Cell and Developmental Biology of the Eye ((EYE))

Abstract

We discuss here, the role of the Main Intrinsic Polypeptide (MIP) of the ocular lens fiber cell membrane, and its putative role in intercellular communication in the lens. In order to best understand the evidence which has been used in the consideration of MIP function, brief and non-comprehensive reviews of both the gap junction and lens biology are provided.
